School News – February 2022
It is great to be back! The children were very happy to return to school in early January with the confirmation of in-person teaching again which we know benefits staff and children the most. All classes got straight back into routine and learning and there was a great positive atmosphere around the school.
Ms Handcock, Ms Buggie, Ms Gow and Ms Barry have been eagerly working towards the creation of a ‘Sensory Room’ in the school. The school library will be transformed into a sensory room in the coming months for the benefit of any child who may need it. A HUGE thank you to Andrew Shaw and Shaw’s Department Stores for providing us with black out blinds for the sensory room. A HUGE thank you to the Parent’s Association and Jane Blood for a donation towards a ‘Sensory Starter Kit’ for the room. A HUGE thank you to Annette Jones and Suzanne Bennett-both parents in the school for all of their advice re the sensory room. It is hugely appreciated. We are still asking Parents if they have anything at home that may be suitable for the sensory room to please drop it into the school. Anything from disco balls, bean bags, sensory play items etc will be accepted.
Our Christmas Play ‘Light’s Camel Action’ was postponed before Christmas. We are still practising across the school and we hope to perform this play nearer to the February Mid-Term Break so continue to watch this space!
Miss Fitzgerald and 5th and 6th Class have applied to the ‘Artists in Schools’ scheme which is facilitated by Laois County Council in which they award a grant for an artist to come to the school. Our proposed project will consist of an art well-BEing programme based on the themes ‘Multi-Culturalism’ and ‘Bio-Diversity.’ We really hope that we are chosen for this project as there are only a handful of schools chosen in the county. Here’s hoping!
Ms Deirdre O Brien our wonderful SNA took a photo of our ‘Outside Classroom’ in our school garden recently in the snow and sent it into ‘Laois Today’ in which it was featured. You can view this photo on the Laois Today website-it is truly magnificent.
On the 18th of January at 11am, the school held a minute silence for the beloved Primary School Teacher Ashling Murphy who recently passed away tragically. We remember her and her family and close friends in our prayers over the next few weeks. May she rest in peace.
Winter Art is taking place across the school with wintery scenes and snowmen appearing on the walls and in the classrooms. We look forward to Spring time where the mornings and evenings get a little brighter and the baby animals begin to appear while the trees gain their leaves again and the flowers start blooming! We look forward to Spring in school and we are thankful for the brighter days and the plant and animal life we will begin to witness. Plus, a fine day presents in rewards for play time and everyone loves play time in school!
We continue to wish all the families and friends of Maryborough NS health and happiness as we continue to live through Covid 19. Thank you to all the families for their understanding and support during these times in school.
