1st and 2nd Class Musicians in the Making
We had a lovely music lesson today when some of the very talented musicians from 3rd and 4th Class came down to teach 1st and 2nd Class how to play the ukulele. Special thanks to Mr Healy for organising this. We cannot wait to try it again.
1st and 2nd Class Have Been Inspired By Nature
1st & 2nd Class have been learning about symmetry. We transferred our knowledge to our art lesson where we examined symmetry in nature and looked at the symmetrical patterns on butterfly wings. Using oil pastels and paint we created our own butterfly paintings.Aren’t they stunning?
1st and 2nd Class have been inspired by the work of artist Georgia O’ Keeffe
We have been looking at the work of American artist, Georgia O’ Keeffe. She was born in 1887 and went to art college in Chicago. She had her first gallery show in 1916. It was very difficult to be a female painter at this time as most famous artists were men and many people didn’t believe women could be serious artists.
Georgia began painting in a different way – instead of painting the whole flower from far away, she painted flowers up close. People saw flowers in a new way. This style is called abstract. She used oil paints in vivid, bold colours and painted on huge canvases. Her paintings became very popular and she became a very successful artist.
The children put a huge amount of effort into creating their very own Georgia O’ Keefe inspired masterpieces. They spent time considering what colours to choose for their own flower, what colours to use for creating shadows and depth and what colour would compliment their flower as a backdrop.
If you are in the school building, be sure to drop down to see our very own gallery outside our classroom with our magnificent pieces on display.
Money, Money, Money :1st & 2nd Class
We have been busy counting coins and playing shop in 1st and 2nd Class.
Green Fingers in 1st & 2nd Class
Mrs Barry’s class have been learning about the life cycle of broad beans. We planted seeds and are very excited to see the changes happening every day. We planted them in clear bags so that we could observe the root and the shoot growing. They have germinated and are getting taller every day. We will plant them in our school garden in the next few weeks and hopefully, we will be able to see them go through their full life cycle.
Book Character Dress Up Day in 1st & 2nd Class
World Book Day celebrations continued for 1st and 2nd Class with a book character dress-up day. Well done to all the boys and girls for the tremendous effort they made with their costumes and a special congratulations to Adam for the amazing Pikachu costume he made with the help of his granny.
Snow Much Fun in 1st & 2nd Class
1st & 2nd Class children used their best negotiating skills to convince Mrs Barry to let them out into the snow. So much fun was had by all.
World Book Day in 1st & 2nd Class
We began our celebrations of World Book Day in 1st and 2nd Class with a table quiz. Junior and Senior Infants joined us for some fun. The competition was fierce and each team showed their book expertise by answering questions on characters from famous books.
We designed book vouchers for a World Book Day competition and shared our favourite book with our classmates. Dog-man is pretty popular at the moment! We are looking forward to the Book Fair and Dress-up Day next week. There will be a prize for the student in 1st and 2nd class with the best homemade costume!

Friends
We have been learning about what it takes to be a good friend and today we had so much fun interviewing our classmates. We learned so much about each other by asking questions, listening, and being interested in each other’s responses.
